Deliver a brief introduction and share something about yourself. You can skip formalities here and talk about yourself in any capacity you feel comfortable (be it academics, athletics, hobbies, or favorite foods). Though you are not required to respond to any of your peers, you can respond if you like.

What is good writing?
The second part to your discussion posting calls you to draw upon your personal experiences both inside and outside the classroom to identify what good writing is. This is a subjective response, so there are no right or wrong answers. You will be evaluated on your ability to articulate your position (don't get too worried about evaluation for this first prompt- just show some critical engagement and you will be fine).
Hello, I am Michael Riggs and I am a musician. I play violin, guitar, and piano. Currently I am learning to play drums and also I am transferring my skills on guitar to an electric bass I bought. I really enjoy music and it is a huge part of my life. My favorite genres are Rock and Metal. I listen to all kinds of music that fall into those categories.
ReplyDeleteI consider good writing anything that brings out an emotion when you read it. Most of the stories I read in high school didn't have this effect one me, but there have been a few books and even poems that I found outside of the classroom that affected my emotions. Like I said before, I am a musician so consequently I listen to lots of music. Some songs that I listen to have more poetic lyrics than anything I have ever read in school or elsewhere so that is where I find a lot of my favorite poetic writings.

-In my experience, good writing is writing that can keep the reader interested. Good writing is full of details but not overloaded. good writing can keep a reader interested and anxious to see what the next page has in store. good writing is interesting, slightly suspencful, and contains high evel ideas. A good writer can immerse the reader by providing ample details, but not putting so many that the reader gets bored.
Hello, my name is Keyla Ortiz. I graduated high school this year and I am finally a freshman at UCF, it has been my dream ever since I was a kid. I am very hardworking and I’m always striving for success. My plan is to major in Biomedical sciences because I want to be a neonatologist in the future. I’m a science nerd and I love babies so it goes perfectly together! I love to dance, sing, spend time with my family, and do anything that requires creativity. I am also obsessed with the 1950's so I love to watch black and white films and listen to old music. I love just about anything that’s vintage.
ReplyDeleteGood writing in my opinion is when a writer transports the reader. It doesn't matter where they are and what is surrounding them, but all they can focus on is in the reading. In Highschool, i could barely focus on some of the stories we read, but some of the poetry really made me think back to my own experiences and i really enjoyed it. That's why A good writer has to be very descriptive and has to be able to make a reader feel like they are a part of the story. They have to connect with the reader and write in a way where they can understand them. Examples are the best way for me to learn something, so writers definitely have to provide a lot of support on the point they are trying to make in order for the reader to not be lost.
My name is Delfino Macuilatl and I was born in Boynton Beach but raised in Jupiter, Florida. Living in the sunshine state has encouraged me to spend most of down time outside. This led me to play soccer for approximately nine years. During my middle school career my team placed number one in the district. In high school, I played two years of JV soccer and then moved on to play Varsity for another two years. During high school, I was an active member of Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA). HOSA allowed me to compete not just at a regional level but also at a state level. I also enjoy giving back to the community in the form of volunteering my time. For example, I volunteered over 300 hours at the Jupiter Medical Center. Here I was able to interact with a surgeon, which latter led to an internship opportunity. During my internship, I was allowed to work with patients and observe several surgical operations such as gall bladder removal, appendix removal, and hernia. While at UCF I hope to meet people who share the same activities and pleasure of giving back to the community.

What I consider good writing is writing that can grasp the reader’s interest within the first two sentences. Good writing shouldn’t just make a reader question his opinion about a subject but the writing should be able to switch the reader’s opinion relatively easy. For writing to be considered good, the writing should be full emption and not be dry. It also shouldn’t be very repetitive and one should use remarkable vocabulary.
Hello, my name is Michael Sponheimer and I am from St.Petersburg, Florida. I am a business economics major and I play basketball and soccer. In my free time I like to go to the beach, play paintball, the movies, the mall, parties, hangout with friends, and pretty much do anything that is a good time. My favorite place to eat in the entire world is Chick-fil-a but I also love to eat pizza and ribs. I am so stoked to be here at UCF and there is so much to do here all the time. I like to travel the world with my family and I have gone on seventeen cruises, been to Italy, and almost all of the states in America. I do miss being at home at times but I am so excited to be here for college at UCF.

- In my opinion good writing will vary from person to person. What one person might think is a masterpiece of writing another could think needs many modifications. In the classroom you are taught how to read, write, use grammar and punctuation, but outside of the classroom is where you gain all of your real life experiences for what you will write about. Personally for myself, when reading something that has been written I will know by the first couple of pages if I am going to enjoy reading or if I will just stop altogether. Good writing will keep the reader entertained from the first line to the very end of the piece. The best writings are ones who keep you wanting more once you have finished reading them. The most important thing for me when writing and reading writing pieces is flow, the piece must be put together well of else it wont be a smooth delivery and it will take away significantly from the overall presentation of the writing. Good writing is hard to find and that is why everyone is not great at it, but when you do find a masterpiece, appreciate it and learn how to write better from it.
Hello, my name is Jalyn Henderson. I was born In Virginia and I moved to Florida about five years ago. Because I enjoy having fun and being around others, I chose to apply to UCF. I almost cried when I got accepted. I like being in clubs, whether it’s high school or college. I plan on joining a sorority during my time here. My main focus is my education. I am majoring in Biomedical Sciences and I plan on going to Med school. I would like to graduate and use my degree to become an anesthesiologist. I haven’t quite found out what hobby I enjoy that I could make a career out of.
ReplyDeleteWhat is good writing?
I believe that good writing is writing that draws me into the paper. If I realize that I am no longer focused on what I am reading then I would consider it bad writing. Good writing can make the reader feel the intended emotion that the author is hoping for. I also believe that good writing can be any length, whether it is long or short. “Good writing” also depends on what interest the reader.
Hey my name is Kevyn Shroff. I am eighteen years old and I am currently a freshman at University of Central Florida. I was born and raised in Boca Raton, Florida which is about a three hour drive from Orlando. I chose UCF because I want to major in Business Administration and I felt that Orlando has ample opportunities for jobs that relate to my specific field once I graduate. I like to play and watch basketball, football and tennis. I also enjoy just hanging out with friends and family in my downtime.
ReplyDeleteGood writing in my opinion is something that keeps the audience captivated while they are reading it. Good writing is able to keep the audiences’ attention with thorough details and things that relate to the overall theme without overwhelming the reader with useless facts. Having emotion and interesting details in your writing also helps the flow of things throughout the work. If at any point, the audience or reader gets completely lost or confused, I consider this to be bad writing or writing that simply has to be changed or altered.
Hi, my name is Rodly Kevin Pierre-Louis but I go by Kevin. I was born in Haiti and moved to Florida at the age of three. I am a huge basketball fan. I’ve been also playing basketball since I was five. I hope to make it to the next level and have a chance to play in the NBA, but if not I want to become a general doctor. That is why I am majoring in Biomedical. Also by the way I am a huge Miami Heat fan if anyone was wondering. I love to listen to music whenever I have free time. Lately I’ve been listen to different genre of music and find them to be quite entertaining.
ReplyDeleteWhat is good writing?
Good writing is when the writer is able to transform a simple or complex idea and able to develop it with good supporting facts. The write must be able to keep the reader interested in the text. A good write must be able to think outside of the box and come up with new ideas that others would never think of. In all, a good write must always stick to the prompt and not go off on a tangent.
Hello, my name is D'Andrea Dunbar and I am majoring in Biomedical Sciences and Biotechnology. I was born in the United States, but spent most of my days in Montegobay, Jamaica. I enjoy martial arts, the NBA, volunteering, medicine, studying, and reggae music. I planned on studying medicine at an early age after my little brother was admitted to St. Josephs Hospital because of several heart conditions. Watching patience in their beds, especially my brother, brought a sense of helplessness which gave me my dedication to medicine.
ReplyDeleteGood writing effectively explains and includes details that support the subject matter. It should be clear and justifiable. The writing shouldn't be built off of fillers it should contain important claims and suggestions. There should be creative and innovative ideas in the writing that builds interest to the readers. There is no amount of length that determines if the writing is “not good.”
Hi my name is Zachary Medina, but I usually go by Zack. I am currently studying Mechanical Engineering and also intern at a well-known engineering company. I spend most of my days juggling my job and school, but when I do have free time I enjoy cycling and problem solving. For me both those thing go hand and hand because cycling helps me clear my mind which allows me to tackle problems with an open mind. As tough as school is, I also really enjoy learning. I’m not looking to be an expert at anything, but I enjoy being knowledgeable and having some kind of insight into all different types of topics.
ReplyDeleteAs for good writing, I consider any writing that is able to make you feel like you are there; or even feel the emotion of the writer. I love writing that makes the simplest things seem the most beautiful. I consider emotional writing to be good writing because I find myself always trying to describe things with more emotion instead of physical descriptions. I feel like as a writer it is important to immerse the reader into their world and I find that emotion is one of the best ways to do that.
Hello my name is Ashley Chavez and I am currently majoring in Human Communications. I love sports, mostly watching them, because for the most part I am extremely physically uncoordinated. Even though I am not the greatest I enjoy Soccer and Hockey. I grew up watching soccer, when you are Colombian it's almost unavoidable, and hockey is just sort of my own thing that I've come to appreciate. I also enjoy eating and music, when you put my I-Pod on shuffle be prepared because I do not stick with one genre.
ReplyDeleteGood writing depends on the writers ability to express their thought out loud. Our thoughts tend to get lost in translation and our writing is not always the best reflection of our understanding. If only it were that simple for us all, to use the correct amount of humor, seriousness, use the right combination of vocabulary to project a higher level of thinking, because that is what good writing is. Writing that sounds natural, as if the sentences are being read to you be the writer them self. Good writing can make a dull topic sound important and worth the reader's time.
Hi, my name is Ryan. I enjoy working out, learning, and going to social events. I am very motivated and am always trying new things. I enjoy meeting new people and learning about what interests them. If anyone wants to go workout together at the gym or study, let me know. I am very excited to be here at UCF!
ReplyDeleteGood writing is able to make an idea very clear and personal in a reader’s eye. Good writing encompasses a lot of details to present ideas, the choice of syntax makes reading flow, and the sentences are structured for a specified purpose. At the end, the reader has a clear idea for the author’s intention. Also, the piece holds on to the reader’s attention until the end. The piece usually has something new in it that the reader has not seen whether it is how it is worded or the idea that it presents, which keeps the reader wanting to know more. Though, depending on the reader, there could be different views about what is interesting and what is to be considered “good writing”.

ReplyDeleteMy name is Esther Flicker and I’m from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. I just started my freshman year here at UCF and I’m so glad its much more than what I expected. As a kid my mom always put me is sports so that I would stay active and never just sit around and complain about being bored. I’ve played lacrosse, soccer, tennis, basketball, softball and others that I was bad at. In middle school I realized that I wasn’t that good at sports so I moved on to something new. It was acting and theatre. I did that from middle school to high school and who knows I might even audition for a play here at UCF. While doing theatre, I found out that I was interested in movies and how they were filmed so I started doing mini films and I still do it today. It’s a hobby of mine that I enjoy doing quite often. I am majoring in Television Production so I can be part of where the magic happens on TV.
ReplyDeleteWhat is good writing? Good writing to me is when the author draws you in and makes your believe that you are the character going through the same obstacles. Whether its when the main character makes the wrong decision or get glorified for his actions it’s like you’re part of it. Good writing should help you believe that you are in that world that is being described where all your senses are used.
Hey my name is Diego Hoganson. I was born is Dallas, Texas and raised in Boca Raton, Flordia. I am a freshman here at UCF and I plan to major in Finance. I am a huge soccer fan and have been playing ever since I was eight. I also love playing basketball and tennis. I love watching movies, meeting new people, and listening to rock music. I am very happy to be here at UCF.
ReplyDeleteGood writing in my opinion is being able to express your ideas or tell a story in a way that grabs the readers attention. Using imagery is the most important aspect to good writing. Imagery allows the readers to picture in their mind what you are writing about. This also helps the reader further appreciate the writers work. Using smart transitions and word choices are also key to great writing. Of all the books that I have read, the best ones are always the ones that make me feel like I am there with the characters and going through the same challenges as them.
Hi, my name is John Cassaro, but my friends call me Jack. I am from Jacksonville, Florida and graduated from Bishop Kenny High School. I am very enthusiastic about many things such as beach volleyball, surfing, fishing and anything about the ocean or beach. I am also an avid sports fan, I won a senior superlative for most school spirit and am excited to cheer on the UCF athletic teams in the future. I’m an education major and plan to become a high school literature teacher. I love to read. I’m also a huge wannabe fratboy, and can’t wait to actually be in a fraternity.
ReplyDeleteGood writing is the ability to articulate a theme, point, or emotion. A good writer is able to simply communicate what they wish to say while keeping the audience engaged, interested and informed. Good writing skills consist of originality, creativity the ability to speak with rhetorical fluency. A good vocabulary and a sense of humor never hurt anybody’s writing ability either.
Hi, my name is Leeza Negrillo. I was born in Queens, New York and moved to Orlando, Florida at the age of three. I am currently a freshman at UCF and planning to major in Biomedical Sciences in order to pursue a career as a pediatrician. I currently volunteer at a hospital in the area and it has opened great opportunities for me and has made me gain exposure to the field that I plan to go into. I am really excited to be starting a new chapter of my life and look forward to meeting new people and embracing the UCF community.

I like to define good writing as the author’s ability to reach out to his/her audience. I think that good writing should deliver a good message that touches the audience, as well as the emotion that is carried throughout the piece of writing. Good writing should be able to create a clear image to the reader as if the reader is vicariously in the novel and can experience the same things that the characters are facing.
Hello, I’m Matthew Dredge. Im from Cooper City, Florida and am majoring in Sports Management. I recently graduated from cooper city high and am starting UCF with 36 college credits. My favorite things to do include playing lacrosse, going to the gym, listening to EDM, and hanging out with my friends. I plan on playing for UCF’s lacrosse team and also joining a fraternity.
ReplyDeleteGood writing is what you come across when you may not necessarily expect it. It sticks out like a sore thumb and forces you to submerge into the writer’s world. Once your in the writer’s world, you can fully grasp the writing and more than anything, you should want to continue reading. Good writing also grabs a hold of your emotions and should make you feel a certain way about what is going on in actual writing. Whether that emotion be positive or negative, the quality of the writing is based the how much emotion the writing makes you feel.
Hi, my name is Kelly Burnick. I am from Jupiter, Florida and graduated from Jupiter High School. I was an active member of DECA and became vice president my senior year. I am majoring in Marketing. Because my town is right on the beach I started a paddle boarding club at my school. The beach is my second home, and my boat is my first. I take out my boat all weekend and will go fishing, cruising, and playing water sports. I love playing sports even though the only thing I am good at is volleyball. I've played competitively ever since I can remember, both indoor and beach. I like watching sports with my dad and going to games with him.
ReplyDeleteGood writing is something that gets me excited. It has to grab my attention and make me interested in reading more. Good writing should make me feel like I am in the story. It should progressively get better and make me want to keep reading more even after the last word is written. The mechanics should be there, but they are not as important as the message itself.
Hey, I'm Alexander Torres, from Winter Springs, Florida, which is like 15 minutes from UCF! I am a newly minted Nursing major, although I'm a sophomore at UCF. I decided to change my major from Biotechnology to Nursing because I figured why end up working in some huge Monsanto-like corporation when I can help people directly. When I'm not at work or in class I like to let loose and relax with some friends, or do some interwebbing, all while listening to music of course. Even as I write this I'm getting distracted by all my open tabs on Chrome. I am also very interested in comedy, and spend a good amount of my time watching all kinds of stand-up performances online.
ReplyDeleteGood writing is anything that can grab my attention, and keep it for more than 5 seconds. It needs to be engaging and thought provoking, although those thoughts don’t necessarily have to be scholarly or intelligent in any way. Good writing also has to be concise. If the writing doesn't have a clear message, or allusion to a message then it’s just a waste of time. The only people who should have to deal with verbose writing are lawyers and congressman. Lastly, all good writing needs to be sincere. If it doesn't reek of authenticity, then it becomes difficult for the reader to connect to the article in any kind of intellectual or emotional way.
Hello, my name is Lester Couch and I was born and raised in Brandon, Florida; I am currently a sophomore at UCF pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Sciences, hoping to eventually transfer to UF and gain acceptance into their College of Medicine. To tell you a little more about myself, I love to golf, fish, go shooting, anything outdoors really, but those are the top three for sure. But for now, my main focus is college and getting into med school, which most people know, is not an easy task what so ever. Most recently I have had my sights set on cardiology, a field in medicine that I find extremely interesting that could eventually lead to an opportunity in cardiothoracic surgery (which is my “ultimate goal” per say).
ReplyDeleteWhat is good writing?
I believe that “good writing” comes in many forms and can mean many different things to different people. Good writing is not necessarily the grammar and the fine detail but rather the content of the material; does it hold your interest? Does it make you think further past the story? Does it bring out emotion and consume you when you read the text? These are key points that determine (at least in my mind) whether something is “good writing” or maybe somewhat lacking. Although, to say something is “good writing” can be very subjective in that, everyone has specific and personal tastes that pertain to them and them alone. I just like to keep that in mind when judging a piece of written material, not everyone is the same.
Hello, my name is Austin Grimm and I am from Clearwater, Florida. I am currently a freshman here at UCF majoring in Business Management. In my free time I like to hang out with my friends, go to the gym, watch television, eat, and just have a good time. In high school I played football, but I also enjoy playing basketball and baseball. So far I am loving UCF and meeting a lot of new people! I hope to continue making new friends, but more importantly achieving my academic goals. I am ready to put in a lot of hard work so that I can get my degree and be successful in the future.
ReplyDeleteGood writing engages the reader and makes them want to hear what the author has to say. It should make a vivid image in your head using descriptions and almost make you feel like you are watching a movie. When you read good writing you will not want to put the book down and long for more information. It should make the reader understand the point that the author is trying to get across. It should not be difficult for the reader to follow the story and comprehend the authors ideas or visions.
Hello my name is Bradley Rubin. I'm from Weston Florida. I went to Cypress Bay High School and graduated with 1,100 kids in my class. I play lacrosse and i like to smoke cigars. I am a business management major. i want to own my own cigar company when I'm older. I like listening to EDM music and being with my friends.
ReplyDeleteGood writing is one that catches the reader attention. It should interest the reader even if it's a subject the reader usually isn't interested in. Good writing should isn't easy to come across. It should use impressive vocabulary that flows. It should make the reader say " Wow this is some good writing." But it shouldn't confuse the reader just make them think about the writing itself.
Hey, my name is Daniel Schultz. I am from Gainesville, FL, about 10 minutes from UF. I wanted to get out of my home town and meet new people. I played football and basketball in high school. I'm a marketing major and hope to work with a marketing department of a large outdoors company one day.
ReplyDeleteMy opinion of a good piece of writing is something that immediately grasps the attention of the reader. Something that transitions and flows seamlessly is essential in keeping the reader on track. Using strong verbs and descriptive words that aren't overbearing, but show an extensive vocabulary are also attributes of good writing. When I think of good writing, I think of putting words on to paper as if you were telling the audience in person.
